Helsingin Erikoishöyläys Oy specializes in supplying wood products of high quality: mouldings, panels, floor boards, decking, sauna products, made-to-order products, and various other products.
Our business history dates back to the 1930's and the Helsinki suburb of Jätkäsaari, close to Länsisatama. As this port area was enlarged in the 1960's, we moved to Malmi, a more inland suburb of Helsinki. The company has been operating under its current name, Helsingin Erikoishöyläys Oy, since 1996. Helsingin Erikoishöyläys Oy continues to uphold the traditional values of Länsipuu Oy and Länsilista Ky. Today, the company has two production sites: a small-scale production and sales office in Malmi and the main production facility in Lapinjärvi.
Carrying on in the style of Länsipuu and Länsilista, we have manufactured and collected old Helsinki moulding profiles. The models designated by the coat of arms of Helsinki belong to the traditional Helsinki model collection.
By following the best old traditions and practices, we pay special attention to every stage of production. The best wood quality originates from both large-scale and small-scale sawmills. Pine, which we use in most of our products, originates mainly from Northern Finland, where its growth is slow. Northern Finnish pine is superior in structure and it has less knots. Our second-in-importance wood raw material is spruce, and we get it from the Uusimaa and Etelä-Häme regions. Both pine and spruce supplied to us originate from PEFC-certified forests. The rest of our wood raw material comes from Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. We apply careful consideration to the sources of our raw materials and prioritize raw materials from PEFC-certified or FCA-certified forests. Some of the roundwood we saw on our sites. All our raw material is meticulously sorted and sawn in accordance with wood type and quality.
The next stage in production is thermo-treatment of the wood, and it is very important. We currently use six drying chambers provided with Mühlböck automation, which is generally considered to be among the best available. We are proud that the wood we use and supply is dried at the correct temperature and relative air humidity, and that this happens slowly enough. This guarantees a stability as regards the behaviour of the wood. Raw materials destined to become wooden floors are dried to 6%. Raw materials for panels and mouldings are dried to 12%-14%, which ensures that the wood is still flexible enough for making most of the profiles.
Once the wood has been properly dried, it is ready for planing. Helsingin Erikoishöyläys produces special profiles and makes the necessary blades in-house. Once a blade is ready, we proceed to plane the mouldings slowly in order to keep surface waviness to a minimum. We use the Weinig Powermat system in the production of mouldings and the Weinig Hydromat system for panels and floor boards.
Finishing treatments are done primarily on our spraying line, and this allows you to select the tone and glossiness degree of your liking. The products treated can be painted or stained/lacquered or oiled.
All our products are made from the very best raw materials, and ensuring a high standard of planing and dimensional precision matching the profiles required by our customers. We take great pride in our professional know-how, and this also assures the high quality of our products. We always carry out an inspection of the quality of our products.
Most of the wood that we use in our production (spruce, pine, birch) carries a PEFC certificate, which is a guarantee of the legality of the origin of the wood and our suppliers' responsible approach to forest regeneration and to the protection of and maintenance of forest ecosystem viability:
PEFC is an international NGO and one of the world's largest forest certification systems. There are currently more than 260 million hectares of forests that are being used in compliance with the PEFC standards. PEFC covers the entire supply chain and sets specific requirements for all of its participants. You can access the PEFC certificate system's details on the official website.
